This 2005 Xiaguan T8653 Thick Paper Iron Cake is a very solid choice for anyone looking to enjoy semi-aged classic factory raw puerh productions.
The wet leaves give off a really nice incense-like aroma mixed with hints of wood and caramelized sugars - a promising start. Once steeped, you get a lovely aged woodiness with loads of huigan (a minty coolness in the throat) right from the start. There is an interesting sweet thickness to the liquor, lively with notes of sweet plum and a touch of tartness. By the third steep, the tea starts flexing, showing off strength and body but without any unwanted bitterness. Overall, it's warming, complex, and clearly well-made. Highly recommended.
The tea has been stored in Taiwan until mid 2024. The wrappers have some dings and are showing some age. Each cake is approximately 357 grams.
